MODERN DESIGNERS VISIT.
Later than planned (due to personal reasons)
But I finally made it to Modern Designers. I caught the shuttle bus straight after my visit with Textbook
and visited Modern's studio in the Northern Quarter.
I was welcomed by Charlotte and the studio dog. When I walked through the studio, I was blown away by how amazing the studio space was. It's certainly my idea studio.
I then met CD Mat and walked to the meeting space. Charlotte sat in on the portfolio surgery so I felt a little more at ease.
I spoke about what I do and my own thoughts on design and then began showing him my work.
After the surgery, he had a few pointers:
A few photographs are grubby
Get rid of some images that are unnecessary
Re arrange the order of images to tell a better story.
Other than that he was really positive about my work and could tell I loved design.
He thought it was clear that I live and breath design which is always a good sign.
He was very blunt in places but it was all constructive. Although he really liked my work
he thought I would be better suited at a studio that works within the cultural sector and suggested some studios; APFEL being just one.
I mentioned that I wanted to be based in Manchester and he suggested that if that was the case, I should start opening myself up a bit more and broaden myself as a designer. In other words, be a bit more commercial.
He then offered me a paid internship so I could work on commercial briefs. This would be a great way to open myself up alot more and make me more approachable to other studios.
I intend to contact Mat again soon to confirm the placement.
