PPD PRESENTATION.

Here are my notes for Thursday's presentation.

INTRO.
SIMON CHERRY and this is my PPD presentation.

BEFORE DEGREE.

I was studying National Diploma Graphic design COURSE AT SOLIHULL COLLEGE
Clueless of what graphic design was.
But knew it was something i wanted to explore further.
It was here that I was introduced to type but didn't appreciate it at the time.
But learned enough on the course to know I wanted to have a degree in graphic design.

Where I was at the beginning of the course.

This is my second attempt of the course but it is also a
Second chance and a fresh opportunity to work really hard and put all my time and effort into the course.
Last year I lost focus and was distracted by other things outside of uni.
This year I wanted to come back and put 100% into the course.

First brief - As the first year is all about experimenting. I wanted to make sure I tried all aspects of graphic design for me to know where i fitted in and what kind of designer I was.
So for the first brief i focused around hand rendered type and image for HOW TO. It was good to try something new, however the end product was dissapointing and I realised I wasn't that strong of an
illustrator.

DAMAGE - The alphabet soup part one brief allowed me to explore another avenue into graphic design which was applying logic and a more methodical approach to graphic design. We were given one word selected
at random and was told to communicate that word using purely type. I was given the word damaged. So I started looking at damaging letterforms to decrease legibility. I achieved this by distorting
the anatomy of Helvetica and pixelating it to decrease quality of the type.

MOST SUCCESSFUL

My most successfull brief was the speaking from experience brief which also happened to be the last brief of the year. I could apply all the knowledge I had gained during the year eg. Good time management,
More accurate type and layout skills, effective use of colour and understanding and designing around a fixed audience.
The outcome of the brief was a "HAVE FUN" pack which was aimed to encourage future first years to work hard but also to enjoy the course. The pack included motivational cards from ex, successful students
such as ANAND PATEL KEN WONG ETC ETC. Also included in the pack were postcards, a graphic design joke book as well as motivational posters.

Least favourite - collection 100 .DON'T SHAVE.

This was for the brief of a 100. I chose beards as my subject. It was unsuccessful due to the following reasons - Poor time management/project management. I left my final product too late to print so I couldn't
explore the stocks that I had wanted to, therefore the final product was abit weak. Another weak point was research - I didn't conduct enough primary research which included interviews and photography. The content for the publiation couldve been more in depth.

NEXT SLIDE - Things that make me tick -

Type.
Simple but structured layout
The quality of print and different print processes

Examples - Wim Crouwel is a typographer who creates innovative typefaces that do not conform to tradition. Here, instead of having curves or serifs he uses geremotric angles. He applies theory within his design which is something I want to do.

100 days jessica Svendsen. Who effectivly uses simple type and layout to communicate ideas. For example. Here she uses the music of Beethoven to create shapes and typefaces.

Where I want to be next year.
Have a greater knowledge of the industry
Evolve as a print lead designer.
Gain a greater knowledge of packaging solutions

How am I going to achieve this?

First step into the summer will be to contact professionals and ask what they look for in a potential placement and what they expect to see in a portfolio
eg. How many briefs.  I've actually emailed companies such as Thebeautifulmeme, companies which are based in Birmingham as well as other designers graduating this year and catalogue ( tom and ollie )
experimenting with different formats/mediums. for example paper engineering.
Look at companies that deal with things like packaging.
Explore different print methods.
