Website/web presence

My website and twitter account. My twitter is both for professional and personal use. For the personal posts, I'm not unprofessional it just shows my interests in both design and life outside design.

Most of my followers are designers so I aim to keep up a professional/friendly manner.
There has been cases of employers being put off when seeing a future employees twitter due to
tweets. An example being a past graduate posting everything that happens in her private life (mostly bad things) on twitter. I can't imagine any company would want to see that.

Most of my followers are designers and like minded people.

Whenever I visit a studio or a studio comes to LCA I mention them in a tweet as a thank you.
This usually leads to them tweeting me back and ultimately gaining more design followers.

Presentation evaluation

Today's presentation went really well. I thought I could've slowed down whilst speaking but I made sure I was concise and straight to the point. I also made sure to have plenty of slides to keep people interested instead of having them look at one slide for too long.

STUDIO VISIT DAY EVALUATION

Today I visited two studios; Textbook, and Modern Designers.
I gained a lot of confidence as well as advice and contacts for the future.
They seemed to contrast one another which was good because it helped me gain a different perspective.

Textbook were very informal and relaxed (probably because they were young and ex students)
and you could tell they have tons of fun within their work.

Modern were more established and a tad more formal (not that its a bad thing) . The contrast also shows in the feedback. The feedback from Textbook was all positive, Modern were more critical (constructive) but were willing to let me come in for a placement for experience and to open myself to other briefs.
MODERN DESIGNERS VISIT.

Later than planned (due to personal reasons)
But I finally made it to Modern Designers. I caught the shuttle bus straight after my visit with Textbook
and visited Modern's studio in the Northern Quarter.

I was welcomed by Charlotte and the studio dog. When I walked through the studio, I was blown away by how amazing the studio space was. It's certainly my idea studio.

I then met CD Mat and walked to the meeting space. Charlotte sat in on the portfolio surgery so I felt a little more at ease.

I spoke about what I do and my own thoughts on design and then began showing him my work.
After the surgery, he had a few pointers:

A few photographs are grubby
Get rid of some images that are unnecessary
Re arrange the order of images to tell a better story.

Other than that he was really positive about my work and could tell I loved design.
He thought it was clear that I live and breath design which is always a good sign.
He was very blunt in places but it was all constructive. Although he really liked my work
he thought I would be better suited at a studio that works within the cultural sector and suggested some studios; APFEL being just one.

I mentioned that I wanted to be based in Manchester and he suggested that if that was the case, I should start opening myself up a bit more and broaden myself as a designer. In other words, be a bit more commercial.

He then offered me a paid internship so I could work on commercial briefs. This would be a great way to open myself up alot more and make me more approachable to other studios.

I intend to contact Mat again soon to confirm the placement.
THE DAY OF THE VISIT:

I was a bit anxious going in to see Textbook. They seemed to be a lot more crafty and illustrative than I but I soon grew confident in knowing my portfolio was varied and had a lot of different, yet interesting briefs. Finding the place was hard work. They're based in the Islington Mill which is in a relatively remote place in Salford. Even the local residents didn't know where it was. I soon found it right in the middle of a construction site.

When I arrived, I was kindly welcomed by Vicky and she introduced me to her fellow collaborators.
Things started off quite awkward at first but Vicky soon took me to the workshop studio for a chat.

We started talking about their history and how they came from a small college. She also made a very good point about name choice. When asked about how they got the name Textbook, she replied with
We started thinking of names but soon realised that it's about the work that helps support the agency's name. People associate studios by their work, not by their name. We then began talking about how ridiculous some names are and how there seems to be a current trend of having one word names ie. Music, Raw, Qubik, Textbook, Inform...etcetc.

I then began showing Vicky my work and talking through each project. I also brought along physical examples of my work so she could look through them and interact with each project.

Vinkel - She really liked Vinkel and loved that I stuck to the concept and visualised a solid idea. It also helped that she was currently into Nordic architecture  She also mentioned how good it was that I bound the specimen book.

Viner - This was a branding brief and is the most monochrome brief in my portfolio. I explained the symbol idea and she was so impressed she asked chris (designer) to come and have a look.

After showing my work, it was clear they were impressed and said my portfolio was one of the best they've seen.

They gave me a huge list of contacts and recommended to like minded people. They also asked if I had ever sold my work and I said no. They suggested I get in contact with someone they knew who runs a cafe called TAKK in Manchester. It's a Nordic cafe and said my work could be shown at the cafe. This means more exposure for me.

EVALUATION: The visit gave me a huge boost in confidence and taught me to not be so serious with my designs, in other words, I need to have more fun. I've since tweeted them
